My name is Gilles* (53) and my wife is called Mirielle* (49) and we are refugees. We fled from our home in Haiti six years ago because of political oppression. We were active supporters of the opposition party during the election. There were irregularities with the vote and former President Aristide refused a recount. Aristide’s political party threatened us. We were afraid for our lives. We went to the US and stayed there for six years. Finally, we were accepted as legitimate refugees in Canada. We arrived in southern Ontario in February 2008. We left everything behind. Our four children, although adults now, are not with us. We left our jobs. I was working as a supervisor for an international fuel company and Mirielle was a nursing assistant. Now we are starting again. We are taking English classes because our first language is French and looking for jobs. I hope to find work as a carpenter's apprentice. I am strong and very hard working and I have done some carpentry work in the past.
